Thomas Steg (born May 6, 1960 in Braunschweig ) is a German political and communications consultant and chief lobbyist of Volkswagen AG .

Life

After Steg graduated from the Gaußschule in 1979 , he studied psychology at the Technical University of Braunschweig from 1980 to 1982 . In 1981 he moved to the University of Hanover to study social sciences (diploma in 1987, doctorate in 1992). From 1986 he worked for the Braunschweiger Zeitung until he became press spokesman for the DGB Lower Saxony / Bremen in November 1988 .

In 1991 he became press spokesman in the Lower Saxony Ministry of Social Affairs. In 1995 he became press spokesman for the Lower Saxony SPD . In 1998 the then newly elected Chancellor Gerhard Schröder asked him to become Deputy Head of the Chancellery . From October 2002 to October 31, 2009, Steg was deputy spokesman for the German federal government .

In July 2009, Steg took a leave of absence until October 1 to switch to the election campaign team of the SPD chancellor candidate Frank-Walter Steinmeier as a media advisor . The office of deputy government spokesman was taken over by Klaus Vater , previously the spokesman for Health Minister Ulla Schmidt . From October 1 to October 31, Steg returned to his office, although after the 2009 Bundestag elections it became apparent that he would not keep this office in the 17th legislative period beginning in 2009 ( black-yellow coalition ). On October 31, 2009, he retired from the service.

Steg then founded "STEG Kommunikation und Beratung GmbH" and has been working as a freelance political and communications consultant ever since. Since February 2012 he has been the General Representative for Foreign and Government Relations at Volkswagen AG .

At the beginning of 2016, a few months after the start of the emissions scandal , the “Foreign and Government Relations” unit at VW, headed by Steg, was upgraded to an independent area in the department of CEO Müller ; Steg reported directly to Müller. Since April 2018, Steg has reported to Müller's successor in the office of CEO of the Volkswagen Group, Herbert Diess.

Due to controversial emissions tests carried out on monkeys on behalf of the European Research Association for Environment and Health in the Transport Sector (EUGT) , Volkswagen took him on leave on January 30, 2018. After completing an internal special audit, Steg resumed his position in June 2018.

Steg is married and has two children.
