Thomas Zangerl (born June 10, 1983 in Kufstein ) is a former Austrian freestyle skier . He specializes in ski cross and has so far won two World Cup races and a World Championship silver medal.

biography

As is usual with ski crossers, Zangerl was an alpine ski racer at the beginning of his sports career . From November 1998 he took part in FIS races . The best result was a 17th place, which is why he contested his last alpine race in April 2000.

After an almost three-year break, during which he discovered his tendency to ski cross, Zangerl made his debut in Les Contamines in the Freestyle World Cup on March 12, 2003 , but was unable to qualify for the finals. The following 2003/04 season he began with a 13th place in Saas-Fee , which meant winning World Cup points for the first time. On February 21, 2004, he was eighth for the first time in the top ten in Naeba . Due to injury, Zangerl was only able to contest a few races in the two following winters. He only succeeded in reconnecting to the top in the 2008/09 season . On February 19, 2009 he finished second in Voss and thus achieved his best result in a World Cup race to date. Two weeks later he won the silver medal at the 2009 World Championships in Inawashiro , behind his compatriot Andreas Matt .

Two eighth places remained his best results in the 2009/10 World Cup season , while Zangerl finished 18th at the 2010 Winter Olympics . In the 2010/11 World Cup season he finished third twice, while he did not get past eighth place in the 2011/12 season and seventh place in the 2012/13 season . The 2013/14 season was also initially similar. After finishing only 27th at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he surprised everyone on March 16, 2014 in Åre with his first World Cup victory. The second World Cup victory followed at the beginning of the 2014/15 season , on December 6, 2014 in Nakiska . In the further course of the winter there were no podium places, at the 2015 World Championships on Kreischberg he came in eighth.

In the 2015/16 season , Zangerl achieved second place and four other top 10 results in Idre , while he did not get past eighth place in the 2016/17 season .

Zangerl ended his career on November 19, 2018.
