The Thomson Summit is a 1515 m high and mostly snow-covered mountain in the West Antarctic Ellsworthland . In the Behrendt Mountains it rises between Mount Goodman and Mount Chandler .
A team of geologists led by Peter Dewitt Rowley (* 1942) from the University of Texas explored the Behrendt Mountains between 1984 and 1985 as part of the United States Antarctic Research Program . At Rowley's suggestion, the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the mountain in 1985. It is named after the British geologist Janet Wendy Thomson from the British Antarctic Survey , who was part of Rowley's team as an exchange scientist and who climbed the mountain in 1992. The first ascent was made in January 1966 by a team from the University of Wisconsin .
