history
On February 19, 1953 , the founding of the city was announced, named after the then governor Dan Thornton . On January 31, 1954 , the first 40 families moved into the new houses. The first shopping center opened in May 1955 . On 26. May 1956 Thornton was awarded the status as City and had 8640 inhabitants.
