Thorvald Aagaard

Hans Thorvald Aagaard (born June 8, 1877 in Rolsted , Funen , Denmark ; † March 22, 1937 in rings , Denmark) was a Danish composer , organist , violinist and music teacher .

Life

Aagaard came from a farming family and was born on Rolfstedgård [Rolfstedhof] near Rolsted. His parents were Anders Hansen (1839-1926) and Anna Hansen (1851-1928). He received violin lessons as a child. From 1896 he attended the Askov Højskole . In Copenhagen he took private violin lessons from Carl Nielsen from 1898 .

From 1900 to 1902 he studied violin with Valdemar Tofte , organ with Otto Malling and music theory with Jørgen Ditleff Bondesen (1855–1939) at the København Conservatory of Music . After his military service he took private lessons in composition and counterpoint from 1903 to 1905 with Carl Nielsen and from 1904 to 1905 in music history with Thomas Laub . His musical activity was greatly inspired by both. Here in the university association he met the violinist and composer Oluf Ring (1884–1949), with whom he shared musical interests. He later worked with him and they had a lifelong friendship.

In 1905 Aagaard became organist at the Nazareth Church of the Valgmenighed in Ryslinge , Funen. Although he had been accepted for the position as organist at the Vartov Church in Copenhagen, he turned it down. Tied to his homeland, he preferred the more rural location on Funen, as he had never really felt comfortable in the big city of Copenhagen. He was also a teacher at Ryslinge højskole from this year on . He earned his special status in Danish music through his work on the renewal of the Danish song. As an organist, like Thomas Laub, he initially campaigned for the modernization of Danish hymns. For this purpose he wrote a collection of 30 psalm melodies. He introduced new songs in the sense of Laubs in church singing, so that the congregation was soon called the "Laubske congregation" of Denmark. Another indication that he felt comfortable in Ryslinge is that in 1907 he commissioned the famous architect PV Jensen-Klint (1853–1930) to build a house. In the same year he founded the amateur orchestra Fynske Musikanter . It consisted of farmers, teachers and artisans. He conducted it in over 400 concerts in and around Ryslinge. This shows its great importance for the spread of classical and romantic music on Funen, as many only got access to classical music through the orchestra.

On October 19, 1908, he married Karen Madsine Bangdine Helga Hansen (born October 15, 1881 in Fredericia , Denmark; † May 26, 1955 in St.Lukasstift, Hellerup , Denmark), the daughter of Svend Heinrich Hansen (* 1851) and Maren Pedersen (1851-1917).

In 1908 he published the article Folkelig Sang in Højskolebladet , in which he criticized the state of the repertoire of school singing with regard to serious deficiencies. Together with his teachers Thomas Laub, Carl Nielsen and Oluf Ring, he planned to put together a new songbook for the school with new compositions of higher quality. Aagard was the driving force, his friend Ring, the youngest of the four, his colleague. He was able to win his two teachers, Laub and Nielsen, as established composers for the project. The four musicians were later called "the four-leaf clover of Funen". In 1912 they were officially commissioned to work on the new songbook. Completion, however, lasted until after the First World War .

1913 appeared in the 7th edition of Folkehøjskolens Sangbog for the first time a song by Aagard on a text by Jeppe AakjaerJeg lagde min Gaard i den rygende Blæst . In 1919 he published Ni viser til Tekster af Jeppe Aakjaer ("Nine Wise Men on Texts by Jeppe Aakjaer").

In 1922 the school song book with over 575 songs was published. It contained 73 new songs and 63 arrangements of folk songs and hymns from the church hymn book Danske Kirkesang by Thomas Laub, 48 new songs by Carl Nielsen, 28 by Ring and 35 by Aagaard. Despite the radical break with music tradition, they prevailed. Many songs influence Danish musical culture to this day, such as For example : Jeg ser de bøgelyse Øer with lyrics by LC Nielsen , and the songs with lyrics by Jeppe Aakjær Spurven sidder stum bag Kvist , Sneflokke kommer vrimlende and Han kommer med Sommer, han kommer med Sol . Further publications of song books followed.

In 1930 and 1932 he brought out two collections of preludes for the divine service in the style of Thomas Laub. In 1933 his violin school, which was widely used in Denmark, appeared, which he had consciously designed for a wider range of lessons, which he already stated in the title for seminars, music schools and private lessons . In 1934 his 24 melodies for Old Testament songs appeared. Aagard wrote many articles for the newspapers Højskolebladet and Fyns Tidende . Aagard was so popular that celebrities later raised funds for him during a serious illness for a rehabilitation stay in Norway. Until his death in 1937 he held the position of organist at the Nazareth Church. His grave is in the cemetery in Ryslinge. His successors also carried on the musical spirit of Aagaard and Laub. At first it was Karl Bak, Oluf Ringes son-in-law. In 1938 he published a list of Aagaard's works. He was followed by his brother's daughters, Esther and Dagny Aagaard, who held the position of organist for almost half a century until 2000.

meaning

Aagaard wrote the melodies for some songs that are still popular today, especially in Denmark, such as Spurven sidder stum bag Kvist and Jeg ser de bøgelyse Øer . Together with Carl Nielsen, Oluf Ring and Thomas Laub, he was one of the innovators of Danish folk song in the first half of the 20th century.

The current Danish church hymn book Den Danske Salmen from 2003 contains four songs by Aagaard:

  • Lovsynger gentlemen, min mund og with indre , No. 3
  • Jesus, min drot  ["Jesus, my Lord"], no. 60
