Thumlock was an Australian rock band from Wollongong that was formed in 1994 and disbanded in 2002.

history

The band was formed in 1994 by drummer Greg Eshman, guitarist and singer Ben Lough and bassist Wayne Stokes. The name is a combination of the English words "thumbscrews" (" thumb screws ") and "hemlock" (" hemlock "). In late 1995, four songs were recorded for a first self-titled demo at Main Street Studios , allowing the group to achieve appearances with Shifter, Dettol and Mudlungs. In 1997, the self-published EP Dripping Silver Heat , which was recorded in the Powerhouse Studios in Sydney and consists of five songs. After guitarist Raff Iacurto joined the line-up, another EP was recorded under the name Lunar Mountain Sunrise and released in 1999 on High Beam Music . After appearances with Hawkwind in early 2000, the debut album Emerald Liquid Odyssey also joined High Beam Music , which allowed the group to increase its popularity. In Europe , the album was distributed through Beard of Stars Records . The band also recorded the cover Out of Focus for a Blue Cheer Tribute album. The song was also released as an EP in an edition of 200 pieces together with the exclusive studio recordings by Moon Dragon and Zygocact in June 2000. Rockin 'Course was released as a single in 2001 , which was played several times on the radio. After a single called Modulator , which also includes a cover version of the Hawkwind song You Shouldn't Do That , the second album Sojourns Lucid Magic was released in April 2002 . For the end of the year, the band planned a European tour with Nebula and The Monkeywrench , which could not be realized because neither Beard of Stars Records nor High Beam Music could support the tour financially. The band then broke up. In their career, the band also performed with Nebula and Rollins Band , among others .

style

Chris Barnes of hellridemusic.com noted 1970s-style riffs and influences from psychedelic and progressive rock . While listening to Lunar Mountain Sunrise, he noticed strong similarities with the Grateful Dead or Jefferson Airplane of the 1960s, but also Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer . In an interview with him, Wayne Stokes stated that these groups exerted influence over the members. His other influences would include groups like Orange Goblin , Motörhead , Radiohead , Budgie , Australian rock music, and early Metallica .
