Thurø is a Danish island in the " Danish South Seas " southeast of Svendborg and east of Tåsinge . The island forms its own parish ( Danish : Sogn ) Thurø Sogn and has been part of Svendborg Municipality in the Syddanmark region since the 2007 municipal reform .

Until 1970 she belonged to Sunds Herred in Svendborg Amt , from 1970 to 2006 to Svendborg Municipality in Fyns Amt .

The island has an area of ​​7.53 km² and 3545 inhabitants (January 1, 2020). It is Denmark's second most densely populated island (after Amager ).

Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigel lived on Thurø during their exile: the writer Karin Michaëlis had a wooden house built for them next to their house in Birkeallé. Even Walter Benjamin was among the guests here.

Since February 1, 1934, the island has been accessed by a bridge to Fyn. Before that there was a ferry connection with the electric ferry Thurø .
