Tiago Cardoso Mendes [ tiˈaɣu ] (born May 2, 1981 in Viana do Castelo ), Tiago for short , is a former Portuguese football player .

Career

In the club

Tiago played his first season in 1999 at Sporting Braga . In December 2001 he moved to Benfica Lisbon , eleven months later he made his debut for the Portuguese national team . At Benfica he scored 13 goals in 31 games. In the 2003/04 season he won the Portuguese Cup with the capital club.

Tiago was nominated for the 2004 European Championships , which took place in their own country, but was not used. He injured himself at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens . After a season with Chelsea in England , Tiago moved to the French club Olympique Lyon in August 2005 for a € 10 million transfer fee .

On June 21, 2007 Tiago was committed by the Italian record champions Juventus Turin . Juve paid a transfer fee of 13 million euros to Olympique Lyon. In Turin he could not perform as expected. Tiago was often only substituted on by coach Claudio Ranieri and was sometimes harshly criticized by the media and fans. In the summer of 2008, some clubs were interested in his signing, but the Portuguese turned down all offers and stayed in Turin .

In January 2010, after he had only come under the new coach Ciro Ferrara for short appearances, for the second half of the 2009/10 season on loan to the Spanish first division club Atlético Madrid . In the summer of 2010 it was awarded again to Atlético Madrid for a year and a loan fee of one million euros. For the 2011/12 season he was permanently signed by Atlético Madrid.

On May 19, 2016 Atlético Madrid announced the extension of his contract, which also tied him to the Madrid club in the 2016/17 season. After the 2016/17 season, Tiago ended his career.

In the national team

Tiago played several games for Portugal's U-18 and U-21 national teams . On November 20, 2002, he made his debut in a friendly against Scotland in the senior team . He then took part in the 2004 European Championship in his own country, but was not used during the tournament. After the European Championship, Tiago developed into a regular player in the national team. At the 2006 World Cup , he played five World Cup games. After he was not nominated for the European Championship in 2008 , he took part in the 2010 World Cup again and scored two goals in the group game against North Korea .

After the World Cup, Tiago resigned from the national team after 58 international matches for personal reasons. After a strong season with Atlético Madrid , however, he was persuaded four years later by national coach Fernando Santos to make a comeback, whereupon he played eight more international matches from October 2014 during qualifying for the 2016 European Championship . A serious injury prevented another tournament participation. Tiago played his last international match on October 8, 2015 in the European Championship qualification against Denmark .
