Tiapride (N-2- (diethylaminoethyl) -5-methylsulfonyl-2-methoxybenzamide) is an antihyperkinetic with a plasma half-life of 2.9 to 3.6 hours. It is one of the typical neuroleptics . In terms of its effect and structure, tiapride is very similar to sulpiride . The active ingredient is usually used as the hydrochloride .

Mode of action

Tiapride acts as an antagonist on dopamine receptors .

It is used for obsessive-compulsive movement disorders :

  • for the treatment of tics in Tourette's syndrome ,
  • in dyskinesias e.g. B. in chorea ,
  • and - although a neuroleptic itself - in the movement disorders caused by other neuroleptics, such as akathisia and dyskinesia (e.g. the "tripping" caused by haloperidol).
  • also tiapride can be used as an antiemetic used

It also plays a role in the treatment of alcohol withdrawal , and a weak antidepressant effect has been reported.

Trade names

Tiaprid is commercially available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland as a generic and in Austria under the name Delpral.
