action

In 1865 in the south of France: Dr. Hughes takes the supposedly deaf and dumb young beggar Timothée into his house for one evening and gives him food. Timothée had been watching him and his young daughter Joséphine for a few days. Now he performs magic pieces at the table and fascinates the doctor because despite his primitive manner he can write. Timothée claims that he can predict the future: Among other things, he thinks he sees illness and pregnancy in the future. Joséphine is afraid of him and leaves the table prematurely. The next day she feels sick and stays home alone. When Timothée comes to the house while her father is absent, she hastily closes all the shutters. When he finally stands in front of her, she can no longer avoid him. He talks to her whatever she takes in. While eating, he succeeds in hypnotizing her. He makes her undress in memory of childhood and he rapes her. She half wakes up from the trance and threatens him with a knife, but she cannot fend him off. When Timothée leaves the house shortly afterwards, she follows him, even if she does not know where it is going and why she is unable to return to her father.

After a long walk, Timothee and Joséphine stay with farmers for the night. Joséphine is completely under his spell and, on his instructions, slides across the room on his knees. When the farmers throw him out of the room, she reacts compulsively and cramped until he can relieve the tension. She passes out and lets him carry her into the bedroom, where he assaults her. The farmers throw both out. This is followed by several days of long walks during the day and rapes at night. Joséphine tries to escape him a few times, but is unable to make herself understood by the environment. Occasionally she manages to express her disgust on his face, then again she enjoys being with him. In an attack, Timothée's hand is injured and the cut is only poorly treated. He and Joséphine attend a wedding in the village, where Joséphine, in a trance, lets Timothée injure her shoulder with a red-hot iron. She feels no pain and is only appalled by her wound the next morning. She flees from Timothée to the next house, where she can attract the attention of two men. She tells them who she is and that she fled from her tormentor. The men want to inform the gendarmerie the next day, but Timothée manages to get Joséphine out of her refuge at night. Again both roam around. Timothée's injury worsens until he collapses. Joséphine notifies a pharmacist who in turn calls the gendarmerie. Timothée arrested her for kidnapping.

In the interrogation that follows, Timothée claims that Joséphine followed him on her own initiative and that everything was done with her consent. During the interrogation, Joséphine is undecided, but then realizes that she was under Timothée's spell, rejected his actions, but could not do anything about it. At the trial, Timothée admits that he can hypnotize people. Joséphine noticed and felt everything, but was unable to defend herself. Timothée is sentenced to twelve years in prison. Joséphine returns to her father, who soon gets worse and worse, without knowing why. Joséphine is pregnant and gives birth to Timothée's child. Nevertheless, she marries her fiancé Paul Frere. Her father dies and Joséphine decides to move to Paris with her husband. Shortly before leaving, she and her son visit Timothée in prison. The child does not have a name yet and Timothée decides that it should be named after him.

criticism

"Carried by the excellent leading actress, a difficult-to-access, nonetheless gripping mixture [of] historical film, chamber play and fantasy develops," said the film service . “Consensus cinema for a broad audience looks different!” Wrote moviepilot on the occasion of the film's premiere in Locarno. For Focus , Tief in den Wäldern was a “multi-faceted drama” and a “gripping historical erotic thriller”, while Cinema rated the film as a “heavily played, controversial drama” and the German alternative title Deep in the Woods - Abducted and violated criticized as misleading.
