Tienditas bridge

The Tienditas Bridge ( Spanish Puente Internacional Las Tienditas ) is a multi-lane road bridge between the Colombian city of Cucuta in the department of Norte de Santander and the Venezuelan city Tienditas in the state of Táchira crosses the border river Río Táchira. The national road connection over the 280-meter-long bridge is the main connection between the two neighboring states and their capitals Bogotá and Caracas, which are around 1,400 kilometers apart .

The $ 35 million structure is about seven kilometers north of the Puente Internacional Simón Bolívar and five kilometers south of the Puente Francisco de Paula Santander . These two smaller bridges should - after 40 years of planning - be relieved by the urgently needed new construction.

The Tienditas bridge consists of three parallel prestressed - girder bridges each have two columns : two three-lane bridges for both directions of travel and about ten meters wide pedestrian and bicycle bridge. The three bridges were simultaneously cantilever concreted from their total of six piers. In January 2014, the companies Pilperca from Venezuela and Conconcreto from Colombia began construction work.

The bridge was completed in February 2016. Because of the increasing tensions between the two countries since 2015, neither side has so far been interested in installing the missing installations in the customs clearance buildings. The roadway has been blocked with concrete blocks and fences since at least mid-2017.

Aid goods conflict at the Tienditas bridge

In spring 2019, tensions increased at the border bridge. USAID aid deliveries were massively collected in nearby Cúcuta . These were to be transported to Venezuela over the Tienditas Bridge for people in need under the leadership of the self-appointed interim president Juan Guaidó . To prevent this, the Venezuelan military reinforced the bridge blockade on February 6, 2019 using two ISO containers and a truck tanker on the roadways. In addition, at the end of January 2019, the Maduros government saw evidence of a US military intervention in Venezuela and only interpreted the USAID aid as a pretext.

On February 22, 2019, a benefit concert initiated by Richard Branson under the motto Venezuela Aid Live took place on the approach to the Colombian side of the bridge . The following day, the barriers were to be broken by volunteers carrying USAID supplies. However, this failed due to a massive security force from Venezuela. On February 23, the Venezuelan side also blocked the border crossing with a concert under the motto “Nothing for the war, hands off Venezuela”.
