Tilden is a city in the US state of Nebraska , the majority of which is in Madison County , the rest of the city is in Antelope County .

It is perhaps best known as the birthplace of Scientology writer and founder L. Ron Hubbard and baseball player Richie Ashburn . Tilden was originally founded as Burnett in 1885, but the United States Post Office officially changed the name to Tilden in 1887 after confusing it with the city of Bennet , Nebraska . Tilden is named after the presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden .

The first settlers opened up the area of ​​today's Tilden in autumn 1868, another 10 families joined in the following spring . When in 1880 in Antelope County , near the border with Madison County, a train station was created, the city of Burnett was founded between Madison / Antilope County. The official establishment took place in October 1885. At that time the city had 218 inhabitants. In 1918 the population of Tilden had grown to 1000 and the city was officially declared a second-class city.
