Tilemann Grimm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tilemann Grimm (born February 27, 1922 in Höxter ; † July 25, 2002 in Göttingen ) was Professor of Sinology (Chinese culture, history and languages) in Münster (1962–1965), Bochum (1965–1974) and Tübingen (1974– 1989).

Life

Grimm came to Beijing with his parents as a toddler and lived in China from the age of 2 to 13, where he attended the German Embassy School in Beijing from 1928 . He learned Chinese as a child and dealt intensively with his Chinese environment, which is why his classmates ridiculed him as "Sinolögchen".

From 1930 Grimm lived with his family in Tianjin until he left China again in 1934, two years earlier than his parents. His mother, Irmgard Grimm, was of the opinion that it could not be good for her son to grow up as a "master" in China, where "white children" were spoiled beyond measure. His father, Reinhold Grimm, accompanied him to Germany, while his mother stayed behind with the other two children in Tianjin. In the course of the voyage, Reinhold Grimm only really got to know his now 14-year-old son and took a liking to the boy.

He was an editor at the Deutsche Allgemeine Sonntagsblatt .

Grimm later studied Sinology and Japanese Studies in Hamburg ; In 1953 he received his doctorate with a thesis on The Neiko of the Ming period and completed his habilitation in 1959 on education and politics in Confucian China of the Ming period . In 1978 he was accepted as a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . 1985/1986 Grimm was a research fellow at the Historical College in Munich.

Research priorities

Grimm worked as the Maoism - expert known. His translation of the Red Book appeared in 1967 and is still used today. His monograph on Mao Zedong , published in 1968, has seen numerous new editions.

Other areas of research by Grimm were the Ming Dynasty and Burma .
