Tlaxcala , officially Tlaxcala de Xicohténcatl , is a city in the Valle de Puebla-Tlaxcala in the central Mexican highlands with about 15,000 inhabitants and is located in the state of the same name . The name goes back to the Tlaxcalteks , a Mexican tribe of the Nahua family who settled there.

Tlaxcala is the capital of the state and the municipality of Tlaxcala . It is the smallest of all Mexican capitals as well as the tenth largest city in the state of Tlaxcala.

In the government palace of the city you can admire the work of a Mexican representative of the muralism movement, Desiderio Hernández Xochitiotzin : a 450 square meter fresco that depicts the history of the Tlaxcalteks in detail.

Toponymy

Tlaxcala is a so-called deverbal place name, derived from a verb of the Nahuatl language, the language of the Tlaxcalteken : Tlaxcallan (formed from tlaxcalli "baked" - the local corn biscuit, called tortilla in Spanish - and an assimilated locative suffix tlan "place", meaning "place" where tortillas are baked ”).

history

Tlaxcala was the political center of the Tlaxcalteks, who were hostile to the Aztecs . Their empire remained independent from the Aztecs throughout the pre-Hispanic period. After initial resistance, the Tlaxcaltecs became Hernán Cortés ' most loyal allies against the Aztec enemies during the Spanish conquest of Mexico .

The Church of San Francisco in the city center was consecrated in 1521 and is the oldest of the American continent. Tlaxcala has been the seat of a Roman Catholic diocese since 1959 .
