Tom Fowler

Thomas William "Tom" Fowler (* 10. June 1951 in Salt Lake City ) is an American bassist of fusion music .

Life

Fowler grew up in a musical family as the son of jazz teacher William L. Fowler and brother of musicians Walt and Bruce Fowler . He first learned the violin before turning to the bass; impressed by rock music , he switched from double bass to electric bass at the age of 16 . He was initially a member of It's a Beautiful Day in 1972 and 1973 and can be heard on their albums Choice Quality Stuff / Anywhere and Live at Carnegie Hall . In New York he played with Bill Watrous and Enrico Rava. He was best known for his participation in records and tours by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention (1973 to 1975), with albums such as Over-Nite Sensation , Roxy & Elsewhere and Apostrophe (') . From 1975 he worked in the family band The Fowler Brothers , with whom he presented several albums. At the same time he played with George Duke (1975) and Jean-Luc Ponty (1975-76). He later accompanied Hildegard Knef (DVD stations ), Hidehiko Matsumoto and, since 1993, Ray Charles . Between 1975 and 2008 he worked on 17 albums in the field of jazz.

After Fowler was part of The Grandmothers in 2012/13 , he toured with Robert "Bobby" Martin's band Banned from Utopia since 2014 , which consists mostly of former musicians Frank Zappa .
