Tom Garling

Thomas James "Tom" Garling (born August 1, 1965 in Danville , Illinois ) is an American jazz trombonist , arranger and composer .

Live and act

Garling grew up in Barrington , Illinois; as a child he received piano lessons from his mother. He played the trombone in high school and was a member of the Illinois All-State Jazz Band for two years ; He also played rock music as a keyboard player in local clubs. He studied arrangement and composition at Berklee College of Music (1983-1985), then he went on tour with Buddy Rich for a year . From 1987 he studied at the University of Miami , where he earned a bachelor's degree in jazz performance and a master's degree in jazz composition and arrangement. In addition, he worked a. a. with Frank Sinatra , Tony Bennett , Dizzy Gillespie , Chick Corea , Pat Metheny and Randy Brecker .

After graduation, he taught at the college for a year before joining the Maynard Ferguson Big Bop Nouveau Band and serving as musical director and trombonist for six years. Under his own name he recorded the album Maynard Ferguson Presents Tom Garling in 1996 , and he also worked as a musician and co-producer on numerous Ferguson productions such as These Cats Can Swing (1994), One more Trip to Birdland (1996) and Brass Attitude (1998). He also recorded with Frank Mantooth ( Persevere 1989, Dangerous Precedent 1991, Sophisticated Lady 1994, and A Miracle 1999). As an arranger he worked with Liza Minnelli , Tito Puente , Michael Feinstein and Diane Schuur . In 2004 the album Campin 'Out was created under his own name . His trombone concerto Parts of the Sum of One was premiered in Aarau in 2009 .

Garling has taught at Northern Illinois University and Roosevelt University in Chicago .
