Tamás Bakócz ( Croatian Toma Bakač ; * 1442 in Erdődy ; † June 15, 1521 in Esztergom ) was a Hungarian cardinal and politician from the Erdődy family.

Life

Bakócz came from a family of the Hungarian aristocracy and was born on the Erdőd estate in Szatmár county . He was adopted by his uncle Bálint Bákocz, who enabled him to train as a priest . Tamás Bakócz studied law in Wroclaw and at the University of Padua . He later became one of the secretaries of Matthias Corvinus , who in 1486 appointed him bishop of Győr . In 1490 he became a member of the Privy Council and Chancellor. He then became Bishop of Zagreb .

Under Vladislav II he received one of the richest dioceses in Hungary as Bishop of Eger . In 1497 he became Archbishop of Esztergom and thus Primate of Hungary. From 1490 until his death in 1521 he was Chancellor of the Kingdom of Hungary and responsible for the country's foreign policy. Lazarus Secretarius served him as scribe .

In 1500 Alexander VI raised him . the Cardinal and appointed him cardinal priest of San Martino ai Monti . Since 1507 Cardinal Bakócz was also titular patriarch of Constantinople . After the death of Julius II , he took part in the October 1503 conclave to elect the new pope. He used his great political influence, including his wealth, to influence the election in his favor, but was unable to assert himself against the ultimately elected Pope Julius II.

He returned to Hungary as the papal legate with a bull from Leo X for a crusade against the Turks. He commissioned the Székely György Dózsa with the preparations for the crusade . This decision resulted in a devastating peasant uprising .

After the death of Vladislav II (1516) he lost political influence. In the last years of his life he was so sick that he could not leave his house. When he died on June 15, 1521, he left his relatives (who called themselves Count Erdődy after his place of birth) a fortune in the millions.
