Tommy Bryant

Tommy Bryant (born May 21, 1930 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † January 3, 1982 ibid) was an American jazz bassist and pop singer.

Live and act

Bryant comes from a musical family; the mother led a church choir; his brother was Ray Bryant ; his nephews are Kevin and Robin Eubanks .

He learned the double bass at the age of twelve and was further promoted in high school. Bryant first played with Billy Krechmer, then with Red Nichols and with Elmer Snowden (1949-52) before he was called up for military service in 1954 (until 1956). He then worked with his own trio (1957), in Jo Jones ' Trio (1958) and with Charlie Shavers (1959). Bryant was also on record with Roy Eldridge ; Dizzy Gillespie , Barney Wilen , Big Joe Turner and Coleman Hawkins involved. In the last decade of his life he worked often in a follow-up band to Ink Spots , which was directed by Bernie Mackey and which also included Able De Costa and Bill Goodwin . He was featured as Tom Bryant on his numerous recordings with Mahalia Jackson . According to Tom Lord , he was involved in 57 recording sessions in the field of jazz between 1957 and 1976, most recently with The No-Gap Generation Jazz Band (with Paul Quinichette , Harold Cumberbatch , Steve Browman, among others ).
