Island Records is a music label and is part of the Island Def Jam Music Group . Today it belongs to the Universal Music Group , which in turn is a subsidiary of Vivendi (until 2006 Vivendi Universal).

history

Island Records was founded in 1959 by Chris Blackwell in Jamaica . Since originally only Jamaican music was to be published on the then independent label , sublabels such as Surprise Records, Sue Records, Jump Records, Black Swan Records and Aladdin Records were quickly outsourced.

The company was one of the most important record labels in the 1970s and 1980s. The distinctive logo with the palm tree was featured on many well-known albums, as the company was responsible for some influential artists over the past four decades, including: a. Bob Marley and U2 .

Finally Island Records was bought by the major label PolyGram in 1989 , merged with Def Jam to Island Def Jam Records in 1999 and is now owned by Vivendi (formerly Vivendi Universal) through a few intermediate stations.
