Tommy Castro (born April 15, 1955 in San José , California ) is an American blues guitarist.

Life

Already at the age of ten he showed an interest in the guitar and listened to blues greats like Eric Clapton , Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop . As he got closer to the blues, he was enthusiastic about the guitar playing of BB King , Buddy Guy , Muddy Waters , Elmore James and Freddie King , as well as the vocal styles of Ray Charles , Otis Redding , Wilson Pickett and James Brown . Until 1991, the year the Tommy Castro Band was founded, he played in various bands in the Bay Area . In 1993 the band won the Bay Area Music Award for best club band of the year, a success that they repeated the next year. Working as the house band for NBC's Comedy Showcase increased their popularity as it aired immediately after "Saturday Night Live" and reached so many viewers. In 1996 they recorded their first album, Exception to the Rule, which received critical acclaim, as well as his second, which made him widely known. Castro hit the cover of the Blues Revue and received a special article that was full of praise. On his third album, Delbert McClinton and Dr. John as a guest musician. In 2000 the album "Live at the Fillmore" was released, which also impressed BB King. In 2001 he left Blind Pig Records and then recorded albums for various labels. His last work, "Hard Believer" was released on Alligator Records . In 2010 he was nominated for the Blues Music Award in four categories.
