Toni Bruk

Toni Bruk (born September 11, 1947 in Kubschütz ; † December 17, 2020 ) was a Sorbian film director and film producer .

life and work

Toni Bruk studied literature at Leipzig University and Charles University in Prague . In 1980 he became head of the newly established Sorbian Film production group (Serbska filmowa skupina) at DEFA . The group based at the DEFA studio for animated films in Dresden made two to three short films per year that dealt with Sorbian history and culture and were shot in German and Sorbian. Bruk made portrait films about Maria Grollmuß and Mina Witkojc , among others . After the fall of the Wall, Bruk became head of the SORABIA film studio based in Bautzenwhich for a long time produced the Lower Sorbian television magazine Łužyca .

Because of his commitment to Sorbian filmmaking, Bruk is also known as the Nestor of Sorbian film . Bruk made his last public appearance shortly before his death in the RBB documentary Sorben ins Kino! by Knut Elstermann .
