Tony Marino (* 1957 in Scranton ) is an American musician ( double bass ) who is best known for his work in the groups of David Liebman .

Live and act

Marino first played guitar at the age of eight; when he was 13 he switched to bass and played in his school orchestra. He was influenced by Ray Brown , who played on television with the Merv Griffin Orchestra. He was also influenced by Tommy Williams, Stan Getz's bassist at the time . He began his professional music career as a house bassist in clubs and resorts in the Poconos and Catskills , where he accompanied a variety of well-known entertainers such as Vic Damone , Joan Rivers , Robert Goulet and Nell Carter . In the same clubs he played with jazz musicians such as Al Cohn and Zoot Sims , Mose Allison , Phil Woods , Hal Galper , Urbie Green and John Coates Jr .; first recordings were made from 1980 in Pennsylvania a. a. with Bill Goodwin 's Solar Energy, Vic Juris and in the band Asparagus Sunshine (with Rick Chamberlain, among others ).

Marino then moved to New York to play in the groups of George Young and Dave Liebman. In 1996 he recorded the album The Latin Jazz Project . In the following years, recordings with Liebman, Tom Lellis , Tsuyoshi Niwa , Shigeko Suzuki , Frank Tusa , Ed Summerlin , Bob Dorough ( Too Much Coffee Man , Blue Note, 1998) and Jacque Tara Washington followed, and in the 2000s continued with Hal Galper, Lew Del Gatto , Jimmy Amadie , in Pennsylvania also with Skip Wilkins, David Leonhardt, Matt Vashlishan and Ron Thomas. During this time he also recorded several multi-track albums alone, such as Samba De Say Party and Broad Street , 2018 Thank You for the Music . He was also a regular guest at the Delaware Water Gap Festival . In the field of jazz, he was involved in 98 recording sessions between 1980 and 2018, according to Tom Lord .
