Tony Miranda

Anthony "Tony" Miranda (* 1919 in New York City ; † November 11, 2001 ibid) was an American horn player who not only emerged in the field of classical music, but also worked as a studio musician and in the field of jazz .

Live and act

Miranda graduated from Brooklyn College with a bachelor's degree; he also attended the 1940 summer school in Tanglewood . During the Second World War he did some of his military service in the US Army Band in Washington, DC, at the end of the war in France.

He then worked as principal horn player at the New York City Opera for twelve years and played in the American Symphony Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini . He was also a member of the New York Chamber Soloists , Musica Aeterna and the Little Orchestra Society and the Long Island Philharmonic . Miranda played the American premiere of Richard Strauss's Horn Concerto No. 2 in the Town Hall with Little Orchestra Society under Thomas Scherman . As a soloist, he has performed with numerous orchestras across the country.

He can be heard on numerous recordings with Toscanini, Morton Gould and Leonard Bernstein . As a studio musician, he accompanied Luciano Pavarotti , Frank Sinatra , Percy Faith , Perry Como , The Beatles , Astrud Gilberto and Phil Glass . He also appeared on the Coca Cola Hour and the Sid Caesar Show . In the jazz field, he was involved in albums by Curtis Fuller , Paul Desmond , Gil Evans , Ralph Burns , Art Farmer , Dave Amram ( Subway Night ) and Miles Davis ( Sketches of Spain , Miles Ahead ).
