Torah Augestad
Tora Augestad (* 10. December 1979 in Bergen ) is a Norwegian classical music - new music - and jazz - singer , conductor and actress .
Life and work
Augestad completed her academic and musical training at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo and at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm . There she was taught as a singer by Svein Bjørkøy, Torsten Föllinger, Ståle Ytterli and Håkan Hagegård . Both classical and jazz singing were part of the curriculum. In 2009 she graduated with a master's degree in musical singing from the Norwegian Academy of Music with a focus on the works of Hanns Eisler , Kurt Weill and American composers.
Tora Augestad sang in the ensemble of Norwegian soloists “Det Norske Solistkor” from 2000–2005. She also sang in her own jazz ensemble "Music for a while". Her album Weill Variations was released in 2007 on Grappa Records. She took on roles in music cabaret and opera productions, as an actress at the "Teater Ibsen" in Skien and at the Norwegian "Riksteatret" (Reichstheater). She conducted the "Norges ungdomskor" (Norwegian Choir) 2004–2006. She also worked with the “Oslo Sinfonietta” (Oslo Symphony Orchestra) and at the Oslo Chamber Music Festival. In August 2006 she sang Arnold Schönberg's “ Pierrot Lunaire ” there. Augestad was a member of the acapella group “Pitsj” from 1999–2006, then vocalist in the “ Trygve Seim Ensemble”.
In spring 2007 she moved to Berlin to work with Central European ensembles of new music, including the Ensemble Modern and the Klangforum Wien . In 2008 she took on a leading role in a new opera by Marcus Paus based on Roald Dahl's " Witches ". She was cast in Håkon Berge's new musical “ The Cityterminal ” and she sang the mezzo-soprano role of Princess Eboli in a new version of Verdi's “ Don Carlos ” .
In March 2009 she performed with her jazz band in the main program at the Kurt Weill Festival in Dessau .
Since the premiere of Beat Furrer's opera Wüstenbuch in 2009, she has been working with the Swiss director Christoph Marthaler . In 2010/11 she was on stage at the Basel Theater in the extremely successful production Meine faire Dame - Marthaler's own version of My Fair Lady - and in 2012 in his production Sale at the Zurich Opera House .
