Torsten Geerdts

Torsten Geerdts (born April 16, 1963 in Neumünster ) is a German politician ( CDU ).

Since January 1, 2014, he has been the spokesman for the board of the German Red Cross , Schleswig-Holstein regional association.

From October 27, 2009 to June 5, 2012 he was President of the Schleswig-Holstein State Parliament. Before that, he was Parliamentary Managing Director of the CDU parliamentary group there since 2008.

Life and work

After graduating from secondary school , Geerdts completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk and then did his military service . He then worked as an employee of the German Red Cross in Neumünster. He is chairman of the German Child Protection Association in Neumünster.

Political party

Geerdts joined the CDU in 1979. From 1985 to 1992 he was district chairman of the Christian Democratic Workers' Union (CDA) in Neumünster, from 1992 to 1999 CDA state chairman in Schleswig-Holstein and from 1997 to 2010 deputy state chairman of the CDU Schleswig-Holstein and chairman of the CDU district association Neumünster. Geerdts was also district chairman of the CDU Neumünster from 2012 to 2013.

MP

From 1992 to 2012 he was a member of the state parliament of Schleswig-Holstein . Here he had been a member of the board of the CDU parliamentary group since 1996 and was deputy chairman of the social committee of the parliament from 2002 to 2005. On January 1, 2008, he succeeded Monika Schwalm as Parliamentary Managing Director of the CDU state parliamentary group . Torsten Geerdts won his constituency directly in the state elections on September 27, 2009 and thus entered the state parliament again. From October 27, 2009 to June 5, 2012 he was President of the State Parliament. In the state elections in 2012 he lost his direct mandate; the state list, on which Geerdts was in second place, did not get a chance, which is why he is no longer a member of the 18th state parliament . His successor as President of the State Parliament was Klaus Schlie (CDU).

Geerdts was sent to the Federal Assembly by the State Parliament in 1999, 2004, 2009, 2010 and 2012 .

Geerdts was a member of the council from 1990 to 1994 and from 2003 to 2008 as chairman of the CDU parliamentary group of the council of Neumünster. He did not run for the 2008 local elections.

Public offices

Since June 28, 2017, Torsten Geerdts has been State Secretary in the Ministry of the Interior, Rural Areas and Integration of the State of Schleswig-Holstein in the state government led by Prime Minister Daniel Günther . There he is responsible for the areas of integration and police.
