Toshinori Kondō
Toshinori Kondō ( Japanese 近藤 等 則, Kondō Toshinori ; born December 15, 1948 in Imabari , Ehime Prefecture , Japan ; † October 17, 2020 in Kawasaki (Kanagawa) ) was a trumpeter of jazz avant-garde and fusion music .
Kondo's first influences in jazz were Charlie Parker , Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis . In the 1970s he came to New York from Japan, where he worked with members of the downtown scene , including Bill Laswell and John Zorn . In 1978 he played with Derek Bailey . His first solo album was made in 1979. In the same year he performed with Eugene Chadbourne at the Total Music Meeting . In 1981 he was a member of a Peter Brötzmann project for the first time . In 1982 he performed with Paul Lovens and with the Globe Unity Orchestraon. In the 1980s he returned to Japan and founded the group IMA , with which he was quite successful. He also played in Jam Rice Sextet (with Yōsuke Yamashita , Akira Sakata , Gerald Ohshita , Hideaki Mochizuki and Shōta Koyama ), which recorded the album Jam Rice Relaxin ' live in 1986. Since 1992 he has belonged to the Die Like a Dog Quartet Brötzmanns and later also to his Chicago Tentet. He played with Tristan Honsinger and eventually settled in Amsterdam, where he continued to live. In 2002 he organized a major peace festival for the Dalai Lama in Hiroshima .
Kondō was best known for its fusion of free jazz , noise and electronic music. Here he worked with musicians like DJ Krush and Tom Cora . He was used for recordings for the United Future Organization , but also for the jazz canteen. He has also written music for Japanese crime films. In 2017 he played in a trio with Peter Brötzmann and the American pedal steel guitarist Heather Leigh .
