The sixth stage of the Tour de France 2004 led over 196 km in a south-westerly direction from Bonneval to Angers . With three sprint ratings and no mountain rating, the stage was ideal for the sprinters and the classic specialists.

The race started very aggressively with Krivtsov's attempt to break away from the French Ag2r team, which however briefly failed. Shortly afterwards, a leading group of twelve drivers broke away from the main field, including Voigt, Zandio, Lang, Tombak, Knaven, Zanini, Pineau and Kirsipuu. However, they could not stay at the top and were quickly swallowed up again by the large field. With the merger, however, there was again an escape from Bartoli, Marinangeli and Engoulvent. However, this attack was also unsuccessful.

After that there was another attempt to break away by six drivers, which was thwarted again by the field. Thereupon Janek Tombak tried it alone, which should not succeed either.

At kilometer 21, a group was finally able to break away permanently: Bertolini, Lotz and da Cruz. Shortly afterwards Flecha and Engoulvent also caught up. The last to join was Arvesen from Team CSC. The lead increased only gradually to a maximum of 4 minutes.

In the meantime, Brioches La Boulangère, the team of overall leader Thomas Voeckler, set the pace and thus controlled the outliers. The closer it got to the goal, the faster the lead melted. Flecha was able to break away from the leading group in the last few kilometers, but the field swallowed him up shortly before the finish.

Lance Armstrong also fell at the beginning of the race , but his team brought him back to the peloton . The sprint was overshadowed by a fall on the last kilometer. In the mass sprint, Tom Boonen clearly prevailed ahead of Stuart O'Grady and Erik Zabel.
