The Tour de Gourze is a lookout tower at 924 m above sea level. M. in the municipality of Bourg-en-Lavaux in the Swiss canton of Vaud .
situation
The tower, built in 1279, is 10.5 meters high. 50 steps lead to the viewing platform at a height of 9 meters. The platform offers a view of the Valais Alps across Lake Geneva to the Jura .
From the parking lot you can reach the observation tower in about 1 - 2 minutes.
history
The building that exists today was originally a tower, possibly linked to the one from the Romanesque era.
First written records in 1279. At the beginning of the 14th century, the tower with a height of about 15 to 16 meters was torn down during the disputes with the Bishop Pierre d'Oron of Lausanne by the Baron Ludwig II, Lord of Vaud.
Towards the end of the 14th century, the tower was rebuilt by Bishop Guillaume de Menthonnay. In 1530 the tower was sold to the parish of Villette. The tower was restored in 1895 and 1909. The tower has been owned by the Canton of Vaud since 1910.
