Trance (spelling: TRANCE) is considered to be the co-founder of German Heavy Metal in the 1980s and has been active again as TRANCE since 2011 after being broken up in the meantime and a phase of renaming to Trancemission .

history

founding

In 1974 the duo of singer Lothar Antoni and guitarist Markus Berger with drummer Stefan Gerdon and bassist Hansi Jantzer as well as keyboard player Clemens Schlindwein came together as a school band under the name TRIBUT to make their own music. In 1978 Markus Berger, Lothar Antoni, Hans-Peter Jantzer and Stefan Gerdon founded the band AGE, which they renamed TRANCE the following year. In 1980 the band took part in a rock competition, achieved second place at the Ludwigshafen am Rhein Promotional Prize festival and won the SWF3 music festival in Rülzheim . At the turn of the year 1980/1981, Jantzer and Gerdon separated from the band, whereupon bassist Thomas Klein and drummer Jürgen Baum were hired. Michael Kessler was the second guitarist in the band for a few months in 1981. In August 1981 the band produced their first single A Hard Way to Go / Haze in the Twilight in the Bad Cannstatter recording studio Zuckerfabrik . This effort was made because demo cartridges were usually used for the label search, but the aim was to stand out from the competition.

In 1981, Trance signed their first record deal with Rockport Records. In December of the same year the first album Break Out was recorded, which shortly afterwards turned out to be an "overnight sensation", because the almost eight-minute song "Loser" on it became a hit and helped the band to achieve an international breakthrough. At the beginning of 1982 a tour through Benelux and Germany followed, which included 14 appearances.

Record deal and interlude as a trance emission

The first two albums Break Out (1982) and Power Infusion (1983) were released by the Rockport Records label, with a total of 150,000 units sold by these two records. Thereupon Trance gave concerts all over Germany as well as in the Netherlands and Belgium , about 150 per year, and played with groups like Accept and Warlock . She also played in the Netherlands at the Aardschok Festival together with Vandenberg, Mercyful Fate and Raven . The album Victory followed in 1985 . The album was recorded in the Dierks Studios in Stommeln and accompanied by quarrels with the record company, which expanded to cover design. Due to different marketing views, the band separated from their label and their manager. Since he claimed the naming rights of the band for himself, the band changed their name to "Trancemission" on their next album Back in Trance . This fact was denied at the time, however, and it was claimed that the new name reflected the "New Beginning Mission". There had been no new beginning with Dieter Dierks , who had been entrusted with all label tasks, because of his permanent involvement with the Scorpions and Accept. So the group returned to Rockport Records. After regaining their naming rights, the band changed their name back and released Rockers in 1992. The album features a cover version of When a Man Loves a Woman by and with Percy Sledge . The album was released by Mausoleum / Belgium. After that, the band decided to break up after a farewell tour. However, since the demand for the band was high, the decision was made to continue and founded the World of Trance GmbH . In 1993 Boulevard of Broken Dreams and 1994 Shock Power , a compilation with newly recorded songs from the first two albums. Internal differences again led to the dissolution. However, Berger and Antoni then decided to revive the band again with new members, long-time roadie Andreas Meyer on second guitar, Michael D'Aguiar on bass and Manni Reckendorfer on drums. The band released the album Die Hard at LCP Productions in late 1996 .

Dissolution and first re-establishment again as a trance emission

In 1998 Trance finally said goodbye to the rock stage. Lothar Antoni and Andreas Meyer moved back to the studio in 2002. In 2003 the album Back in Trance II was released , with Joe J. Hagl on bass and Alex Franken on drums, again under the name Trancemission. In August 2005 the follow-up album was recorded and published in October under the title Mine . As a trance emission one is still on the road in the country.

Second re-establishment again as a trance

In March 2011, the former trance musicians Markus Berger, Jürgen Baum and Thomas Klein decided to reunite with the new singer Daniel Würfel under the original name of Trance. The comeback took place in July 2011 at the Winestock Festival, near Neustadt an der Weinstrasse , supported by guest keyboardist Roland Moschel. At the end of 2011, they separated from Daniel Würfel and the search continued for a suitable front man. In 2012 they found the right man in Joachim “Joe” Strubel, who was active in bands like AC / ID, an AC / DC tribute band, and Crusader, a Saxon tribute band. Roland Moschel, keyboard player of the Palatinate cover band Someone Else and previously a guest musician with Trance, has now been signed as a permanent member of the band. Under the motto “Trance Back in Town”, the first concert with the new line-up took place in Landau / Pfalz on December 21, 2012 in the Colosseum. At the beginning of 2013 the band separated from original drummer Jürgen Baum. A successor was found in Jürgen “The Animal” Kappner, with whom Trance already competed at the Plätzelfeschd Festival on August 16, 2013.

Since the band was blocked between 2011 and 2015 for private reasons, only a few concerts took place.

In January 2016 the decision was made to record a new album, which was then realized between April and July in the VPS Studios in Hamm with producer Charly Czajkowski (Rage, Axxis). Publication is planned for early 2017. [obsolete] In March 2016 Mike Möller (Break Out Promotion) took over the management of the band. Roland Moschel and Jürgen Kappner left the group in April 2016. As a new addition, Andreas “Neudi” Neuderth from Manilla Road was hired as a drummer in May, who also recorded the entire album. Since he is only available for trance for a limited time due to his international concert engagements, a solution was found with two drummers. The drummer Jens Gellner from Masters of Disguise has been a permanent member of the band since July. As a second guitarist, Eddie St. James, from Hollywood / Los Angeles, joined the band in August 2016.

style

In his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal. Volume 2: The Eighties described Martin Popoff Break Out as traditional and melodic German Heavy Metal, reminiscent of groups like 220 Volt , the Swedish Overdrive or Accepts Balls to the Wall . Lothar Anthoni's singing is reminiscent of groups like Trouble or Nazareth . Lyrically the band denounces the moral emptiness of the world and preaches a compassionate anarchy and point out the mistake that results. Popoff again made comparisons with Trouble. On Power Infusion , according to Popoff, the band is again concentrating on traditional heavy metal, which is, however, in the up-tempo area. He described the songs as philosophically and emotionally profound. On Victory , the band fell even deeper into the world of depression and claustrophobia , with Popoff warning not to listen to the first three albums at once, as otherwise one could fall into a depression. In The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal. Volume 3: The Nineties Popoff wrote that on Rockers, the band hardly shows any of the sadness of their predecessors and that they have become too experimental. On Die Hard they got back to their roots a little: The speed of the songs often varies, they are well structured and occasionally remind of UDO .

The Rock Hard Encyclopedia placed the band musically between Scorpions and Accept.

According to Manfred Meyer from Metal Hammer , some would consider the band to be the third most important hard rock band in Germany alongside Accept and Scorpions. In the review of Victory , Frank Kleiner admitted that he had never had much to do with the band as he always viewed them as a copy of Scorpions. Above all, the singing is a major weak point of the band, which Antoni cannot cover up, especially in the higher vocal ranges. According to Matthias Prenzel from Metal Hammer , Back in Trance is the first album on which Trance succeeds in stepping out of the shadows of Accept and Scorpions. The vocals are suffering and almost pathetic , the riffs catchy and the rhythm driving. According to Andreas Schöwe from Metal Hammer , the band on Boulevard of Broken Dreams hardly remembered their predecessors, although back then they reminded of groups like Scorpions, Accept, Grave Digger , Running Wild and Sinner . According to Martin Groß from Metal Hammer , Rockers could not build on the successes of their predecessors, although the music on the album was "pretty unspeakable canteen hard rock". Schöwe described Shock Power as "a well mixed up summary of the first two LPs BREAK OUT (82) and POWER INFUSION (83)".
