The Trans-Gabon Railway ( French Transgabonais ) is the only railway in Gabon . It leads 670 km from the port of Owendo south of Libreville via numerous stations to Franceville .

construction

A railway line was first planned in 1885. The planning of the current railway began in 1968. The financing was in 1973 and construction began the following year. The first section from Owendo to Ndjolé was opened in 1978, the remaining sections followed gradually until December 1986. The entire operation between Owendo and Franceville was started in 1987. At F CFA 1,500 billion at the time, the costs were well above budget and almost led to the country's bankruptcy.

The Trans-Gabon Railway follows the Ogooué to Ndjolé. The most important structures include the Juckville Tunnel, the bridge over the Abanga Marshes and the bridge over the confluence of the Ogooué and Ivindo rivers .

Specifications

The railway is built in standard gauge , which is unusual in the southern half of Africa.

business

The deficit railway was privatized in 1999. The concession was first awarded to the Gabonese Timber Company ( Société nationale des bois du Gabon ), and in 2003 to the COMILOG mining company.
