Trevoa quinquenervia is a kind from the family of the cross thorn plants (Rhamnaceae) and the only member of the genus Trevoa . It is only native to Chile.

features

Trevoa quinquenervia are leafy shrubs up to 3 meters tall .

The flowering period is from mid-August to the end of December. The downy, hairy flowers stand as single flowers or in one to seven-flowered cymes . The slightly pleasantly scented flowers are small and white, there are both hermaphrodite and male flowers , the latter being around 10% less common than hermaphroditic flowers, lighter than these and having a smaller gynoeceum with abnormal ovules . Hermaphrodite flowers are weakly masculine .

The slightly bell-shaped flower cup with fluffy hair on the inside survives the fruiting period, the discus that has grown together with its lower part is inconspicuous. Unlike many genera of the family , petals are present, the petals are dome-shaped. They partially cover the pollen- bearing surface of the four-compartment anthers , it is believed that this protects the flowers from pollen eaters. The stamens are thickened towards the end. The stylus survives the fruiting period, the stigma protrudes from the flower.

The ovary is semi-subordinate and triple. The fruits are thin-walled nuts , they do not open by themselves. Usually only one seed is produced.

Two- winged birds ( hover flies , woolly floats ), hymenoptera ( real bees , Colletidae ) and beetles ( Melyridae ) are suspected to be pollinators .

Distribution and systematics

Trevoa quinquenervia is found exclusively in central Chile. The genus Trevoa was established by John Miers in 1826 , although it was initially invalid, as no species of the genus had been described at that time. The valid description of the genus was only made in 1829 together with the description of the species Trevoa quinquenervia by John Gillies and William Jackson Hooker . Some other species described in the genus Trevoa are now included in other genera, such as Retanilla and Kentrothamnus . Within the buckthorn family , Trevoa quinquenervia is classified in the tribe Colletieae .
