Trifolium sect. Vesicaria is a section in the genus Klee ( Trifolium ). It contains seven species from Eurasia . The asymmetrical, bubble-shaped calyx, which is unique for Klee, clearly distinguishes it from the other sections of the genus. The upside-down flowers can also be found exclusively in this section.
description
The species of the Vesicaria section are annual or perennial , herbaceous plants . The inflorescences are sessile or stalked. When the fruit is ripe, they are spherical, egg-shaped or star-shaped.
Bracts are present, sometimes the lower bracts are transformed into bracts. The numerous individual flowers are stalked or sessile. The calyx is two-lipped with a two-toothed upper lip. The calyx tube widens as the fruit ripens in the shape of a bubble with a network-like ribbed surface, the two calyx teeth become bristly. The lower lip is three-toothed and remains unchanged when the fruit ripens. The throat of the calyx tube narrows or closes.
In some species, the crown is rotated by 180 ° with the flag pointing downwards. It is permanent or falling. The flag is free or fused with the other petals. The ovary is elliptical or egg-shaped with a straight or geknietem pen . The legumes have one or two seeds and are completely enclosed by the bubble-shaped calyx.
Systematics
The type species of the section is Trifolium fragiferum . The section is clearly distinguished from all other sections of the genre. There is only a certain similarity to the Mistyllus section , but there the bubble-shaped calyx is symmetrical. A molecular genetic investigation from 2006 showed that a division of the genus Trifolium into two subgenera Chronosemium and Trifolium with eight sections is probably justified. In this case the sections Mistyllus and Vesicaria would be combined. So far, the sub-genera proposed after this investigation have not yet been validly named .
The species of the Vesicaria section and their assignment according to Michael Zohary and David Heller are:
- Trifolium bullatum Boiss. et Hausskn.
- Trifolium clusii Godr. et Gren.
- Strawberry Clover ( Trifolium fragiferum L. )
- Trifolium physodes Stev. ex MB
- Persian clover ( Trifolium resupinatum L. )
- Felt clover ( Trifolium tomentosum L. )
- Trifolium tumens Stev. ex MB
