Untruths about Denmark

Regan gained notoriety in Europe in August 2018 when she compared Denmark to Venezuela , claiming that there was "something fishy" in Denmark, misquoting Shakespeare . She argued that socialism could never work: not in Venezuela and not in Denmark. Their claims have been rejected in their entirety by experts, members of the Danish government and national and international mass media. Regan claimed that

  • the 2015 income tax rate for all Danes is 56%.
  • everyone would work for the Danish government.
  • there would be high VAT and a vehicle tax of 180% in Denmark.
  • nobody in Denmark would want to work.
  • all Danes would open “cake restaurants” after graduation.
  • Denmark is heavily in debt.
  • all Danes had no “options”.

The Danish Embassy in the USA responded to these unrealistic claims with humor and published a fact check with correct statistics.

After persistent criticism from the international community, consisting of politicians, economists and journalists, who refuted their claims, Trish Regan rowed back; allegedly she does not want to equate the conditions in Denmark with the conditions in Venezuela. Her only concern is that “socialism” - in her world - is not the way forward.

Private life

In 2001 Regan married the investment banker James A. Ben , with whom she has two daughters ( Alexandria and Elizabeth , * 2009) and a son ( Jamie Ben , * 2012).
