Tschkalowsk ( Russian Чка́ловск , until 1948 German Tannenwalde ) is a former suburb of Königsberg (Prussia) , now a district of Kaliningrad in Russia . Before the First World War it was an estate with a larger brick factory.

Tschkalowsk belongs to the central region of Kaliningrad and has about 11,000 inhabitants. Prowehren and Strittkeim , which were independent before 1945, are included . There is a military airfield nearby. There is a secondary school , a hospital and a few smaller businesses here. An Orthodox church was consecrated in 2010.

history

Tannenwalde was first mentioned in a document in 1807. In 1878 it became an independent municipality in the Fischhausen district. With the opening of the Samlandbahn in 1900, Tannenwalde received a rail connection. In 1919, when the place already had 432 inhabitants, the construction of the Tannenwalde settlement to the northeast of the previous development began.

1935 was a military airfield of the Air Force built, of which at the beginning of the Poland attack the III./Lehrgeschwader 1 flew their attacks. The population had increased to 2,669 by 1938. In 1939 the municipality of Tannenwalde was incorporated from the Samland district into the Königsberg district (Pr.) .

On January 28, 1945 the place was conquered by the Red Army , on July 29, 1948 it was named Tschkalowsk after the aviator Valeri Pavlovich Tschkalow .

Before 1945, a predominantly Protestant population lived in Tannenwalde, Prowehren and Strittkeim . All three places were in the parish of the Church Wargs (Russian Today: Kotelnikovo ) incorporated, that the church district Fischhausen (Primorsk) in the ecclesiastical province of East Prussia the Prussian Union of churches belonged.

In the 1920s it became necessary to build a church in the up-and-coming suburban settlement of Tannenwalde, which was consecrated in 1929. Tannenwalde remained parochial connected with Wargen, but vicarious clergy were employed who had their residence in Tannenwalde. On April 1, 1930, an independent parish was established in Tannenwalde, which later belonged to the Königsberg- Stadt parish .

Today Chkalovsk is in the catchment area of ​​the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Kaliningrad within the Kaliningrad provost of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of European Russia .

Chkalovsk is located on the Kaliningrad – Svetlogorsk railway , the former Samland Railway , and on the trunk road from Kaliningrad to Svetlogorsk (Rauschen) , the former Reich Road 143 , and close to the Kaliningrad bypass. In addition to the suburban railway, there are bus routes to Kaliningrad.
