Shosholoza
Shosholoza is a popular South African song. It was composed by Todd Matshikiza in 1959 . The isiZulu word shosholoza means something like “courageously looking ahead” or “we attack”.
It was originally sung by Ndebele miners from what was then Rhodesia as they drove into the mines in the Transvaal . Traditionally, Shosholoza is sung in changing patterns as a call and response by groups of men.
Versions
The song has also been known in the United States and Europe since the 1960s. Pete Seeger sang it in his concert at Carnegie Hall on June 8, 1963, which is considered a milestone. There is also a version of the butterflies from 1971. In Germany, the song is from the films Das Krokodil und seine Hippopotamus (1979, on the soundtrack CD in Italian spelling Ciocio-ciociolosa ), The gods must be crazy (1980 ) and Invictus - Unconquered (2009). Many other contemporary artists interpreted this folk song, including Ladysmith Black Mambazo , Themba Mkhize , PJ Powers , The Glue , Peter Gabriel , Heinz Rudolf Kunze (1985, at the end of his song “Madagascar”) and Helmut Lotti .

In earlier versions, instead of “South Africa”, “Rhodesia” was sung (English for Rhodesia , today's Zimbabwe ), which can be heard in the above-mentioned film The Crocodile and His Hippopotamus .
Sports
In 1995, the song was sung in the stadium when the South African national team won the 1995 Rugby Union World Cup .
During the Soccer World Cup 2010 in South Africa, the African helpers who worked for the German national team sang to move the players from the Shosholoza square .
Other meanings
- The national long-distance trains of the South African railway PRASA be as Shosholoza Meyl referred
- The South African sailing team that took part in the America's Cup also bears this name . It is the first African sailing team in the more than 150-year history of the America's Cup.
- The German choir project Shosholoza sings and dances for projects in South Africa that use music and theater to promote reconciliation between black and white, crime prevention and education about HIV / AIDS. It was originally founded to provide a mouthpiece for the non-violent anti-apartheid movement in South Africa.
