Tsunami is a song by the Canadian DJ duo Dvbbs in collaboration with the American DJ and producer Borgeous . The track was first released on August 19, 2013 as a single and achieved great success worldwide. The instrumental piece belongs to the Electro House subgenre Big Room . Other successful versions appeared together with Tinie Tempah , Tyga and Blasterjaxx .
background
Emergence
The brothers Chris and Alexandre van den Hoef produced the song for Sander van Doorn's record label “Doorn Records” together with Borgeous and Niles Hollowell-Dhar alias The Cataracs or KSHMR . After it was completed, it was played by him on his gigs early on, which is why the track quickly found its way onto the Internet and swarmed across numerous platforms as an "ID". Due to van Doorn's first doctorate, the track was assigned to him, which he denied. Radio DJ Pete Tong finally confirmed on August 16, 2013 on BBC Radio that the song was by Dvbbs and Borgeous. Tsunami was released as a single on Beatport on August 19, 2013 and reached the top of the charts after just one week. At the same time, Martin Garrix also celebrated great success with his song Animals , which is why the accompanying music genre "Big Room" celebrated a kind of breakthrough. Both tracks formed a basis for numerous subsequent songs in the electro house scene.
The structure of the song is based on two leads and two drops. After a 45-second intro, which consists of a monotonous beat, the lead kicks in, playing increasingly more aggressively towards the big room drop. It starts at 1:16 after a short “tsunami” shout. After one repetition, the drop's melody changes slightly and the second lead begins at 2 minutes. This contains permanent, melodic, distorted “tsunami” calls. The second drop sets in after 2 minutes and 33 seconds and switches to the 45-second outro at 3:18.
Due to the involvement of Niles Hollowell-Dhar, the rumor intensified that he was primarily responsible for the song and that the involvement of Dvbbs and Borgeous refer to little to no contribution. However, no further comment was made. As a result of the tsunami a kind of running gag was started and in countless successful and well-known songs the involvement of Hollowell-Dhar or KSHMR was suspected and alleged.
promotion
Due to the release through Sander van Doorn's record label, he was also the one who pushed the song the most. However, it was played for the first time by the Greek-Belgian DJ duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike on July 6, 2013 at the EDP Beach Party in Portugal. Promotion of great DJs like Hardwell , W&W and Martin Garrix followed. The duo played the song for the first time on September 28, 2013 at the Mad Hatter's Castle Festival in the USA. According to Billboard , Tsunami is the most played song at the Tomorrowland Festival 2013. A very important appearance there was that of Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. They played a mash-up there with Bruno Mars ' Locked Out of Heaven . The moment when the drop starts is considered one of the top moments of the festival in 2013. The appearance was viewed hundreds of thousands of times on YouTube. On December 25, 2013, an event sponsored by the Red Cross was held in Leeuwarden Square, The Netherlands. There the duo played the song live and asked the several thousand people to jump in time to insert the drop. The TV recording spread on numerous Internet platforms and counts a number of clicks.
Music video
The song's official music video was first released on August 23, 2013 on the official Spinnin 'Records YouTube channel . It is 2 minutes and 24 seconds long. It starts with jugglers , fire players and drummers beating the drum to match the music. The whole video takes place in a single room. The picture jumps to match the rhythm and shortly before the drop is inserted, a woman makes the appropriate mouth movement to the shout "Tsunami". The drop begins with a fire eater and dancers can be seen. The image is faded out to match the beat. Other prominent people are cheerleaders , a presumably newly married couple and hula hoop artists. The poor lighting conveys a gloomy mood throughout the music video. It ends with what appears to be the only torch that illuminates the room and is ultimately blown out. Neither one of the Dvbbs members nor Borgeous is shown. The official music video has been viewed over 35 million times to date. Furthermore, a music video was released showing Borgeous and Dvbbs at various live performances. With over 177 million views, the original mix still has the most clicks. Furthermore, it was positively rated over 700 thousand times.
reception
criticism
Tsunami received almost exclusively positive feedback. There was little criticism due to the similarity to Martin Garrix ' Animals , which was explained by the typical big room sound. The critics of the music website “Hitfire” awarded the song 7 out of 10 points and declared "The song will certainly be heard everywhere in this country in the next few weeks. Ultimately, it is as strong as" Animals ", but also looks more like it a copy. " The trio received positive feedback from Sebastian Wernke-Schmiesing of the music website “ Dance-Charts ”, who described the track as an energetic, epic progressive house number and it hit the nerve of the times and the party crowd. Furthermore, the song was one of the club hits of the year and was one of the few commercially successful big room songs around the world.
Commercial win
The song became a huge success commercially. The trio hit the charts in over 20 countries, including 12 top 10 positions and four times number one in Belgium, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Scotland, with the UK and Scotland being the Tinie Tempah version . The track was also found in the annual charts. Tsunami achieved gold status in Italy and the Netherlands, platinum status in Canada and double platinum in Belgium. In total, Tsunami was sold over half a million times. The single also moved up to number one for a long time in the Beatport Top 100.

Tinie Tempah version
On March 9, 2014, Dvbbs and Borgeous released a vocal version of the song called Tsunami (Jump) . This was recorded in collaboration with British rapper and singer Tinie Tempah . A part of the rapper was placed over the lead. There is also a rap part during the second part of the drop. Finally, when the drop was inserted, the word drop following tsunami was replaced by a jump , which was decisive for the title. The Promotion Version received early on from numerous British radio stations such as Rinse FM, Capital Xtra and BBC Radio . The single was released on the record label " Ministry of Sound ".
Music video
The official music video of the vocal version first appeared on YouTube on January 23, 2014. It was uploaded from the official YouTube channel of the record label "Ministry of Sound" itself. It shows rapper Tinie Tempah singing the lyrics of the song playback. This music video was also shot in just one room. In addition to Tempah, scenes from various ballet dancers who are also in the room are shown. To insert the drop, Tempah begins to walk through an alley formed by the dancers. As soon as he walks past them, they fall over. Here, too, the poor lighting created a gloomy atmosphere. After just one year, the official music video was viewed over 5 million times.
criticism
The vocal version received mixed reviews. For one, the artists were praised for the way they combined the aggressive instrumental with good vocals and text with background. The Dance Charts site said: "The additional vocals by Tinie Tempah fit perfectly into the atmosphere of the original. This is guaranteed to give the track another boost in the mainstream." Still, fans said that the vocals lost a lot of power.
Commercial win
Tsunami (Jump) was able to push the success of Tsunami and went straight to number one in Great Britain and Scotland. In Australia and New Zealand they each achieved a top 10 placement. In Australia, Tsunami (Jump) achieved platinum status. In Great Britain they received a gold record for over 400,000 units sold. At the end of 2014 the single could also be found in the official annual charts.

Tyga version
In February 2014, the trio first announced their collaboration with American rapper Tyga . A short time later a second vocal version of the song was published on the Internet. A rap part from Tyga was placed on the drop. The lead remained instrumental, except for brief drop shouts from Tyga. The version received strong positive reviews. It has not yet been announced whether a single release will take place. It was not officially published on the Internet either, except through a YouTube upload by Tyga herself on March 4, 2014 with a duration of 3 minutes and 46 seconds. It appeared there under the title "Tyga DVBBS + Borgeous - Tsunami (Remix)". After a year it had over a million views.
Blasterjaxx version
Another single release took place with a version of the Dutch DJ duo Blasterjaxx . This appeared as the "Blasterjaxx Seismograph Refixx". Behind this is a prequel or sequel . This becomes clear from the connection between the actual meaning of a tsunami and the use of a seismograph. A Refixx only means a revision and not a remix. The tsunami shouts were replaced by significantly deeper and calmer seismograph shouts and the entire break was changed melodically. The melody in the drop stays the same, while the syntheses act differently. This version became the most successful official remix. The length corresponds to 4 minutes and 13 seconds.
Other remixes and versions
To tsunami appeared several remixes and bootlegs , both officially and unofficially. Many new interpretations appeared on the Internet portal YouTube in particular. Since the track was assigned to Martin Garrix and Blasterjaxx, among others, before the artist was announced, the first remakes appeared under her name, including by Levito. The bootleg from French producer Merzo was only used once in a podcast. The remixes of the various artists vary greatly in their style and genre. That of the DJ Jay Cosmic, for example, corresponds to the hard style , Wayne & Woods', however, much more to the music style Trap . Ahzee, for example, accidentally used Tsunami with a synth similar to that used by Martin Garrix at Animals .
