The Turkestan tulip ( Tulipa turkestanica ), also known as the Turkestan tulip , is a species of tulip ( Tulipa ) in the lily family (Liliaceae). It is one of the earliest types of tulip to flower in the year.
features
The Turkestan tulip is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 30 centimeters. This geophyte forms onions as persistent organs. The skin of the onions is hairy and silky on the inside. There are (two to) usually four to five leaves . These are blue-green, dull, ribbon-shaped, up to 15 centimeters long and 0.5 to 2.5 centimeters wide.
The white, downy-haired stem bears (two to) four to eight (to twelve) flowers. The bud is erect. The flowers are broadly bell-shaped and narrow at the base. The bloom bracts are ivory white on top and have a yellow background. The outer bracts measure 1.2 to 2.5 × 0.3 to 0.6 centimeters and are narrower than the inner ones. The inner bracts are pointed and measure 1.1 to 2.4 × 0.4 to 1.1 centimeters. The stamens and bracts are hairy at the base. There are two circles with three stamens each. The anthers are purple, brown or yellow in color and have a dark tip. The ovary has a short style.
The flowering time is in March, sometimes even in April.
Occurrence
The Turkestan tulip occurs in West Tianschan and West Pamir in montane to subalpine maple and juniper bushes and in steppes at altitudes of 800 to 3000 meters.
use
The Turkestan tulip is widely used as an ornamental plant in borders and rock gardens. It has been in culture since 1880 at the latest.
