The UBT Ocean is a tanker owned by the Norwegian shipping company Brøvigtank and sails under the flag of the Marshall Islands . The ship was built in 2009 at Zhejiang Dongfang Shipbuilding in Yueqing . The owner of UBT Ocean is Ugland Brøvig Tankers (UBT) from Singapore , the operating company is Nautictank Pte. Ltd. also from Singapore.

The UBT Ocean was on 5 March 2010 at 6:39 PM UTC by Somali pirates off the coast of Madagascar at 9 °  S , 44 °  O brought under their control. According to the shipping company Brøvigtank, the tanker set course for Somalia. The Norwegian news agency Norsk Telegrambyrå announced that the ship with 21 crew members from Myanmar and a cargo of heavy oil was en route from Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania . According to the shipping company , the Maritime Safety Center in the Horn of Africa (MSC-HOA) was not informed about the voyage of the tanker because it was sailing over 1000 nautical miles south of the Horn of Africa . According to a report from EU NAVFOR Somalia, the ship arrived on March 9, 2010 near the Harardheere pirate nest .

The pirates released the ship from their control on July 20, 2010. A pirate, who himself was called Hassan, said the agency Reuters by phone that they four million dollars would get ransom. An independent verification of this information is not possible.
