The USS Sample (FF-1048) was a Garcia-class frigate of the United States Navy . It was named after Rear Admiral William Sample .

history

US Navy

The keel-laying of the sample took place on July 19, 1963 at the shipyard of the Puget Sound Bridge and Dry Dock Co. of the Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company in Seattle . The launch took place on April 28, 1964, the christening of the ship was carried out by Rear Admiral Sample's daughter. The commissioning took place on March 23, 1968 under the command of Commander Ronald T. Kelly.

After all tests were completed, the sample was moved to Pearl Harbor , where it arrived on October 18, 1968 and was damaged the next day by the USS O'Bannon (DD-450) . Subsequent repairs lasted until January 21, 1969 before returning to Hawaii . Sample was assigned to the 7th  Pacific Fleet of the US Navy. She went on patrols in the Sea of ​​Japan , off the coast of the Philippines and Korea , before she was posted to the 1st Pacific Fleet on October 18 and returned to Pearl Harbor on December 12, 1969.

The sample was spent in local waters around Hawaii until 1971, during which time modernizations were also carried out in the dry dock at Pearl Harbor. In January 1972 she was relocated to the western Pacific, where she was used in search and rescue and air surveillance ( Positive Identification RADAR Advisory Zone ) and provided artillery support off the Vietnamese coast. She returned to Pearl Harbor on August 25th. With the exception of one maneuver ( COMUTEX 4-27 ) from December 4th to 8th, she was in port until mid-May 1973. On May 13, 1973 she ran again in the direction of the Western Pacific before she returned to Pearl Harbor in May 1974 and then did not sail.

Brazilian Navy

The sample was leased to the Brazilian Navy on April 15, 1989 , where it was put into service under the name Paraná (D-29). On January 15, 2001, it was removed from the Naval Vessel Register of the US Navy after it was permanently sold to the Brazilian Navy. In December 2004 it was sold to Pakistan for scrapping .

Awards

The USS Sample received several awards for its service in the coastal waters off Vietnam.
