U 3520 was a Type XXI submarine of the German Navy during World War II .

Construction and commissioning

The construction contract for U 3520 was given to the Schichau shipyard in Danzig on July 6, 1943 . The boat belonged to the U 3501-U 3557 series and was given the construction number 1665. The keel was laid on September 20, 1944 and launched on November 23 of the same year. The boat was put into service on January 12, 1945 under the command of Kapitänleutnant Sarto Ballert and was placed under the 8th U-Flotilla in Danzig.

Whereabouts

U 3520 ran on January 31, 1945 at 02:45 am in the Bay of Kiel north of Eckernförde into a British minefield laid out of the air and was sunk by one of the mines . In addition to the 59-man crew, there were 21 men from the U 3536, which had not yet been commissioned, as well as six men from the 7th Warship Building Training Department , eight men from the 8th U-Flotilla and one man each from U 3517 , U 3529 and U 3535 . There were no survivors.

The wreck was lifted and scrapped in 1956.
