U 4705 was a so-called “coastal submarine” of the German Navy in World War II that had a modern Walter drive . The boat wassunk by its own crewshortly before the end of the war .

construction

The Germania shipyard in Kiel was already involved in the submarine building program of the Reichsmarine and later the Kriegsmarine , contrary to the agreements of the Versailles Treaty and accordingly under secrecy, before the war began . From the beginning of the war, the Friedrich Krupp AG shipyard in Kiel mainly manufactured Type VII boats , and the Germania shipyard was also commissioned with custom-made products. The first new developments based on the Walter drive developed by Hellmuth Walter at the Germania shipyard were manufactured here. In 1945 the shipyard completed a total of 11 "Walter boats" of the type XXIII .

Such a submarine was 34.7 m long, 3 m wide and had a crew of 14 to 18 men. Due to their small size, the Type XXIII boats carried only two torpedoes with them, and they had no artillery armament. Such submarines were intended for temporary use in the immediate vicinity of the coast and were therefore also referred to as "coastal submarines".

history

U 4705 was put into service on February 2, 1945 under the command of Oberleutnant zur See of the Reserve Martin Landt-Hayen. The 24-year-old commander completed his submarine training in the summer of 1943 and then commanded U 9 and U 20 patrols in the Black Sea .

On February 2, 1945, U 4705 was assigned to the 5th U-Flotilla stationed in Kiel as a training boat. The boat remained with this flotilla until it was sunk.

Sinking

According to his interpretation of the so-called Rainbow command ordered Commander Landt-Hayen early May, the scuttling of the boat. U 4705 sank in the port of Kiel on May 3, 1945 . The boat was later salvaged and scrapped.
