U 2506 was a German type XXI submarine , which was used by the Navy during World War II .

history

Like many other Type XXI boats that Blohm + Voss built, the building contract for the boat was awarded on November 6, 1943. The boat was launched on August 31, 1944 and was put into service by Lieutenant Horst von Schroeter, the bearer of the Knight's Cross , the last commander of the very successful Type IX B boat U 123 . When Schroeter left U 123, he took the tower emblem with him: the wound badge in black, but he also added a star. The star symbolized the repetition of the coat of arms. Although the base manager of Kristiansand-Süd, Korvettenkapitän Mengersen, said goodbye to U 2506 on April 28, 1945 for the first patrol, the boat was no longer facing the enemy. This “honor” was only given to Corvette Captain Adalbert Schnees U 2511 .

Whereabouts

U 2506 surrendered on May 9, 1945 in Bergen, Norway, and set sail on June 17, 1945 for transfer to Great Britain. The boat reached Lerwick in the Shetlands on June 18, 1945 and set sail the next day with course Lisahally , Northern Ireland , where she arrived in the port of Londonderry on June 21, 1945 . From there it went to Moville on January 1, 1946 , where it was towed to Operation Deadlight and sunk at position 55.37 N, 07.30 W.
