Calls

After completing the training trips, U 656 was used as a front boat in the 1st U-Flotilla from January 1, 1942 . She made two patrols, but could not record any sinkings. It was the first German submarine to be sunk by the US Navy during World War II .

First patrol

U 656 left Kiel on January 15, 1942 for its first patrol. The 14-day mission took them through the Kattegat to the north of the Shetland Islands . There were no opportunities for attack during the patrol. U 656 arrived in Brest on January 28th .

Second patrol

After seven days in port, the second venture began, the route of the convoys from Newfoundland to England. U 656 belonged to the third wave of submarines that were deployed against the US east coast as part of the company Paukenschlag . After the voyage, like the first one, was uneventful, the boat was discovered and attacked by an American air patrol on March 1.
