First patrol
U 656 left Kiel on January 15, 1942 for its first patrol. The 14-day mission took them through the Kattegat to the north of the Shetland Islands . There were no opportunities for attack during the patrol. U 656 arrived in Brest on January 28th .

After the voyage, like the first one, was uneventful, the boat was discovered and attacked by an American air patrol on March 1.
