Construction and commissioning

The building contract was placed on October 20, 1939 at the Deutsche Werft in Hamburg. The keel was laid on February 24, 1941 and the launch on October 9, 1941. U 512 was put into service on December 20, 1941 under Lieutenant Wolfgang Schultze.

Flotilla affiliation and stationing

After its commissioning, the boat was used for training purposes in the 4th U-Flotilla in Stettin until August 31, 1942 . Then it belonged to the 10th U-Flotilla stationed in Lorient, France , as a front boat until it was sunk . During the entire training period and the first and last patrols, KptLt. Whereabouts

On October 2, 1942, the boat was located off French Guiana in the sea area off Cayenne by an American B-18A bomber from 20 kilometers away. The B-18 took the spotted submarine dive-and volleyed it four depth charges, two of which U 512 met before it could dive alarm. ( Location ). 51 crew members were killed. The only survivor, Corporal Franzmachen, drifted for ten days on a life raft that the American bomber had dropped for him before he was rescued by the American destroyer USS Ellis . He was fed by sea birds, which attacked him while he waited for help in the water.
