U 579 was a German Type VII C submarine of the Kriegsmarine in the Second World War , which served as a training boat until its end.
history
It was laid down on August 31, 1940 with hull number 079. The boat was launched on May 28, 1941 and was commissioned under Lieutenant Dietrich Lohmann on July 17, 1941. U 579 was KL Lohmann's second Type VII CU boat, which he put into service (his first submarine was U 554 , which was degraded to a school boat). On October 22, 1941, an accident occurred on board the boat during training at the front in Danzig: a fire in the bow space severely damaged the submarine, which led to the U 579 being decommissioned for repair. KL Lohmann then took over the Lübeck U 89 as a replacement for U 579 . U 579 spent the rest of the war as a training boat under the command of Oberleutnant zur See Günther Ruppelt, who was later lost with his U 356 , Oberleutnant zur See Gerhard Linder, who later took over the Type XXI submarines U 2515 and U 3006 , and Oberleutnant zur See Hans-Dietrich Schwarzenberg.
loss
U 579 was found on the water surface by a Liberator bomber in the Little Belt on May 5, 1945 and destroyed with depth charges. A crew of 24 and the commander, Oberleutnant zur See Schwarzenberg, were killed.
