U 713 was a submarine from the Type VII C , which by the German Navy during the Second World War in the Arctic Ocean was used.
Construction and commissioning
The boat was part of a construction contract that went to the Hamburg Stülcken shipyard and included a total of 22 boats. U 713 was put into service on December 29, 1942 by First Lieutenant of the Reserve Henri Gosejakob.
Commitment and history
The boat initially belonged to the 8th U-Flotilla , which was stationed in Königsberg . During this time, Commander Gosejakob undertook training trips in the Baltic Sea to bring the boat in and to train the crew. On July 1, 1943, the boat was assigned to the 11th U-Flotilla as a front boat. By late autumn of the same year, U 713 had completed three operations in the Arctic Ocean, especially between Spitzbergen and Bear Island . Among other things, a weather radio (WFL) with the code name "Christian" was set up by the crew on Bear Island. In November the boat was assigned to the 13th submarine flotilla , where it remained until it was sunk.
Sinking
Originally it was assumed that U 713 had been sunk on February 24, 1944 by the British destroyer HMS Keppel . More recent research showed that the attack by the Keppel actually targeted U 313 , which escaped undamaged. On the same day, U 713 sent the last report. The boat has been officially missing since February 26th.
