U 577 was a German class VII C submarine, which was usedby the Navy in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean during World War II .

Construction and commissioning of the boat

It was commissioned from Blohm and Voss on January 8, 1940, and laid down on August 1 of the same year with hull number 077. The launch took place on May 15, 1941 and on July 3, 1941 the commissioning of U 577 took place by Lieutenant Herbert Schauenburg, previously in command of the Type II B boat U 20 . The sponsorship of the boat is attributed to Hanover in the literature , as a version of the city's coat of arms was identified on images of the submarine tower . In fact, the Swabian town of Esslingen was the godfather of U 577 . The sponsorship went back to the commitment of the chief engineer of the boat, Albrecht Mauz, who came from Esslingen.

The stakes

The boat belonged to the commissioning of the 7th U-boat Flotilla , based in Kiel and later in St. Nazaire , as a training and front boat before it on 23 March 1942, the Straits of Gibraltar broke and then the 29th U-boat Flotilla , stationed in La Spezia , Italy .

The first venture

U 577 left its old home port of Kiel on October 20, 1941 at 6:00 a.m. for the first undertaking, which was also the transfer to western France to the St. Nazaire base . The areas of operation were the North Atlantic and the waters east of Newfoundland . The boat was at sea for 37 days, 8 hours and 50 minutes and docked in St. Nazaire on November 27, 1941, without having sunk or damaged a ship.

Second venture

The boat left St. Nazaire on December 16 at 17:05 for Messina and broke through the Strait of Gibraltar on December 23 . It met on December 27 at 11:15 a.m., after 10 days, 18 hours and 10 minutes at sea in Italy, again without scoring. After this trip, Herbert Schauenburg was promoted to corvette captain.

Third company

Commander Schauenburg left Messina with U 577 on January 7, 1942 for the last operation. The boat patrolled on this eight-day venture northwest of Marsa Matruh and was again unable to achieve any sinkings.

loss

On January 15, 1942, the boat was discovered by a British Swordfish torpedo bomber on the surface of the water and sunk with several depth charges. No member of the crew survived the sinking of U 577 . It was a total loss with 43 dead.
