Ubud
Ubud is a small town in the south of the island of Bali in Indonesia and is considered to be its cultural center. The district ( kecamatan ) Ubud belongs to the administrative district ( kabupaten ) Gianyar and has 73,830 inhabitants (2019).
Location and traffic
The city is just under 30 km northeast of Denpasar . Mini buses ( bemos ) run from the bus station to Denpasar and in all other directions including Candi Dasa , Kuta , Padang Bai , Lovina and Ngurah Rai Airport .
Cityscape
In pre-colonial times, Ubud served as the seat of Balinese feudal princes. These had the box name Tjokorda (today's spelling: Cokorda). During the Dutch colonial rule, the political importance of the aristocrats was eroded. Nevertheless, members of the former feudal branches of the family have a social significance in Bali. An earthquake in 1917 caused considerable damage to the city. Most of the residents are followers of Balinese Hinduism .
Ubud is considered to be the artistic capital of Bali. Above all painting and textile art, but also traditional wood carvings are cultivated in Ubud. The place has also been known as a residence for European and American artists since the 1920s. The musician and painter Walter Spies lived in Ubud since 1927 and at times as his guest the musician and writer Vicky Baum , who wrote her famous novel Love and Death in Bali in Ubud . Another well-known artist was the Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet . Paintings by Bonnet and Spies are on display in Ubud in the Agung Rai and Puri Lukisan museums .
While Ubud used to be popular with backpackers with its small hostels and guest houses, more and more hotel complexes are now being built for package holidaymakers. Ubud has a number of restaurants serving Balinese and international cuisine. Main roads in Ubud are Jalan Raya Ubud, which runs in an east-west direction, Jalan Wenara Wana (also known as Monkey Forest Road ) and Jalan Hanoman .
Attractions
One of the most important structures in the city is the temple Pura Taman Saraswathi , also known as Pura Sri Saraswathi , which was built in the 1950s and is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Sri Saraswathi , the goddess of wisdom, the arts, education and learning is. In the extensive temple complex, in front of which a pond with lotus flowers was created, there is a statue of the goddess, who is highly venerated by the Balinese, with several arms and holding a book made of stapled palm leaves. The Puri Saren Palace , the interior of which is not open to the public, and the sacred monkey forest , which is home to more than 340 monkeys (mainly macaques ), are also popular. Opposite the palace where the last prince of Ubud, Tjokorda Gede Agung Sukawati, lived, is the Pura Majaran Agung temple , the private temple of the Balinese royal family residing in Ubud. Its entrance gate, richly decorated with stone carvings, is considered to be one of the most beautiful in all of Bali. Many of the city's sacred buildings are decorated with a swastika . The house of the painter Don Antonio Blanco, who died in 1999, is also in the city . His paintings have been exhibited there by his daughter in The Blanco Renaissance Museum since his death .
Surroundings
- Near Bedulu, only a few kilometers southeast of Ubud, there is the Goa Gajah cave temple ("Elephant Grotto "), which was nominated as a World Heritage Site on October 19, 1995 , but is no longer on the tentative list. The syncretic temple contains Buddhist and Hindu elements and must have been a Buddhist center in the 8th century. Nearby was statue of Dyani Buddha Amitabha and small terracotta - stupas ( "Stupicas") have been found with Buddhist symbols. The main sanctuary dates back to the 11th century. In the cave carved into the rock with a T-shaped floor plan, monks who once lived ascetic retreat for meditation . A huge monster sits above the entrance, through whose mouth you enter the cave. A Ganesha statue is enthroned in a niche in the left cross corridor. In the right part there is a triple linga on a stone altar , which symbolizes the Hindu trinity Brahma - Vishnu - Shiva . The 14 × 19.5 m water basin belonging to Goa Gajah was only uncovered during excavations in 1954. On its western edge there are six nymphs (Widadari) made of tuff , through whose jugs water gushes into the basin.
- Not far from Goa Gajah, a footpath leads through the rice fields to the approximately 25 m long and two meter high relief band Yeh Pulu , which is carved into the rock and probably dates from the 14th century. Apart from the Ganesha sitting on the edge, no religious, but very moving everyday scenes are shown here, the meaning of which is unclear.
- On the outskirts of the village of Mas, about ten kilometers southeast of Ubud, more than 4,600 masks and theater figures from Indonesia and other countries in Asia are on display in the Setia Darma House of Masks and Puppets . The Wayang- Kulit figures as well as larger-than-life and very lifelike representations of lions, dragons and mythical figures are particularly impressive and colorful . Artfully renovated historical buildings can also be seen on the museum grounds.
