Prof. Udo Vogel

Udo Vogel (born March 16, 1933 in Tilsit ; † February 14, 2015 in Cuxhaven ) was a German civil engineer and university professor.

Live and act

The Udo Vogels family found a new place to stay in Cuxhaven after they had fled. There Vogel obtained his Abitur in 1952 and completed his civil engineering studies at the TH Stuttgart in 1957. After his diploma, he became a scientific assistant to Walter Pelikan , who holds the chair for steel and wood construction at the TH Stuttgart. In 1961 Vogel was awarded a doctorate degree from the TH Stuttgart with a dissertation on the theory of the orthotropic plate . PhD. With his habilitation thesis on nonlinear load calculation, completed in 1964 and published in 1965, Vogel created the plastic hinge method according to the second order theory. In 1965 Vogel became a scientific advisor and from 1967 to 1968 he did a 14-month research stay at the University of California, Berkeley . After his return he was appointed associate professor at the University of Stuttgart in 1970 . In the same year Vogel followed the call of the TU Berlin to a full professorship for structural engineering, but took over the chair for structural engineering at the University of Karlsruhe in 1973 as the successor to Bernhard Fritz (1907–1980) . In 1976 Helmut Rubin completed his habilitation with a contribution to the non-linear buckling theory and Günter Utescher on the assessment principles of facade anchors at Vogel. In 1976 Vogel and Utescher formed the collegial management of the Institute for Structural Analysis and Measurement Technology.

The research focus of the institute is in the field of non-linear structural engineering, in particular the stability and load-bearing theory of steel structures in the elasto-plastic range. This is shown not only by the doctoral theses of Ülgen Korkut, Werner Heil and Petra Höss, which are supervised by Vogel, but also by the publications of the named personalities intended for engineering practice. Vogel and Heil contributed significantly to the 2nd edition (1982) and 3rd edition (1993) of the "Steel Construction Manual" edited by the German Steel Construction Association (DStV).

Together with Korkut and Theodor Ackermann, Vogel founded the Vogel und Partner engineering office in the autumn of 1981. Vogel was able to expand his scientific contacts to relevant institutes in Japan during his extensive trip in the spring of 1987. At the end of the summer semester of 1994, Vogel retired - the management of the Karlsruhe Institute was entrusted to Werner Wagner in 1995. Udo Vogel spent his retirement in Cuxhaven, has been involved in the Cuxhaven Engineering Association since 1996 and in 2001 took over the chairmanship of the board of trustees of the Joachim Ringelnatz Foundation .

Udo Vogel made a major contribution to the paradigm shift from elastic to plastic design methods in German steel construction. His contribution consists in completing the implementation of the ultimate load method in German steel construction from a scientific, but also from a practical engineering perspective. Thus, he helped this construction method to a significant improvement in economic efficiency.
