Wilhelm Uebe Special factory for medical thermometers in Zerbst

history

The Zerbst druggist Wilhelm Uebe , who at the same time ran a wholesale business for the glass and porcelain industry, developed the closed clinical thermometer as it is known today in 1890 based on numerous customer inquiries . The clinical thermometers that had been used up to now were very cumbersome to use and handle. In his drugstore, he melted the standard glass thermometers he produced at the top instead of sealing them with a plaster stopper. This further development increased the safety of use and the hygiene standard of the clinical thermometer, as it could be sterilized. For years, UEBE's medical thermometers have been the best-selling tools for self-diagnosis worldwide; The clinical thermometer came to Japan through Wilhelm Uebe. In 1893 Wilhelm Uebe presented the novel thermometer at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where he was awarded two diplomas and two medals. After the protection period expired, Uebes invention was legally established as the standard. In 1905 production was relocated to factory buildings; Wilhelm Uebe died in the same year. His widow Anna Uebe took over the management of the company. The company is still family-owned.

After World War II, production in Zerbst continued until 1950 when the company was nationalized. Since many glassblowers from Thuringia had settled in Wertheim at that time, the company followed them: in 1953 it was relocated from Anhalt to Reicholzheim in Baden-Württemberg, a district of Wertheim. The cyclotest brand was launched in 1952 . Under this name, basal thermometers were produced for women to determine their fertile and infertile days; Their special feature was a spread scale in the measurement-relevant area, which facilitated reading and improved the measurement accuracy, which was of particular importance in natural family planning . In 1975 the first digital thermometers were produced. In 1978 stethoscope devices were introduced under the trade name visocor , at that time as handheld and table-top devices . The digital clinical thermometers were then sold under the Domotherm brand from 1985 . This type of thermometer later replaced the traditional UEBE thermometer. In 1989, the company launched the first cycle computer that used the symptothermal method for evaluations. In the same year, the company took part in the " Innovation Prize of German Business " competition with the "Small computer for contraception" project . In 1991 it was also awarded the Baden-Württemberg State of Baden-Württemberg's Innovation Prize for this product . In 1990, UEBE received a patent for the device and method for recording individual body temperatures with an electrical temperature sensor for determining the ovulation date of humans and animals ; The inventor was the company owner Rainer Uebe. In 2000, the company took over the blood pressure monitors division from Roche Mannheim . In 2005 the company offered the system for upward measurement of blood pressure for the first time. The blood pressure values are recorded when the cuff is inflated, which means that there is less pressure on the upper arm. In 2016, with the cycle computer cyclotest myWay, the company was the first German manufacturer to meet the requirements to be assigned to the medical device directive with a cycle computer of class IIb , whereby the product can also be used for contraception. In 2019 the company headquarters was relocated to Külsheim.

Brands

In addition to the Uebe umbrella brand, the company also owns the visomat and visocor brands, under which blood pressure monitors are sold. In addition, contraceptive computers and products for natural family planning are manufactured and sold under the brand name cyclotest and clinical thermometers under the brand name Domotherm.

Thermometer Museum

Since 2015, the company has also been running a thermometer museum ( ) in Reicholzheim on the history of thermometer production. A special feature is a complete production line for thermometer production.
